Melanie Gilbert

Melanie Gilbert is a senior with a 4.0 G.P.A. majoring in History. She is a member of Phi Alpha Theta, the national History honors association, and a cross-country runner. This past summer she completed an internship at the Randolph County Museum and Archives. Her duties there included the historic preservation of artifacts and exhibits in the museum, researching for the museum and filing archival materials dating back to the 1750s. She also attended various history related events in the area, including the Rendezvous reenactment at Fort de Chartres, the oldest French fort in the state of Illinois. As a reenacter, she dressed in eighteenth century attire and demonstrated how to bake bread out of a model stone baking oven displayed inside the fort. She also took part in the annual 4th of July festivities at Kaskaskia, the first state capital of Illinois.

Melanie hopes to research in the field of historic preservation after she graduates in May. She enjoyed her internship so much that she hopes to one day work in a city museum doing research and sharing her love of history with others.
